String Inverters vs. Microinverters

Microinverters

Microinverters are individual inverters that are installed on each solar panel in a system. They offer several advantages, including module-level Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) which maximizes energy production even in partially shaded conditions. Microinverters provide detailed panel-level monitoring, allowing for easier troubleshooting and system optimization. However, they tend to be more expensive and require more complex installation due to their module-level electronics.

String Inverters

String inverters are commonly used in solar power systems and connect multiple solar panels in series. They are cost-effective and offer high efficiency. While they are easier to maintain since only one inverter needs monitoring, their performance can be affected if shading occurs on one panel, impacting the overall energy production of the system. String inverters provide system-level monitoring but lack detailed panel-level data.

Choosing between microinverters and string inverters depends on factors such as shading conditions, system size, and budget. Microinverters are suitable for maximizing energy production on a panel-level basis, especially in shaded areas. String inverters are cost-effective options for smaller installations where shading is minimal. Consulting with a solar professional can help determine the best choice for a specific solar power system.
